Ash Wednesday Rememberences

Lent begins on Wednesday, March 6th with the penitential remembrance of the imposition of ashes. Because of changes in when people are comfortable being out, family schedules and more, we are trying something a little different this year for Ash Wednesday. This year there are three ways you can take part in the imposition of ashes:

  • 12:00 p.m. a brief order of worship with the Imposition of Ashes at NJLC.

  • For anyone wishing to stop in for personal prayer, meditation and self-marking with ashes the sanctuary will be open from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.

  • We have created “Ashes to Go Kits” for those who would not be able to make it to the church on that day (available 3/3). These kits will include a devotional with a suggested prayer, a bible reading, and some questions to ponder together as a family—along with a small bag of ashes with instructions on how to mix them with a little oil so that you can mark each other wherever you find yourselves during the day.

These “Ashes to Go” kits will be blessed during worship on the final Sunday of Epiphany (March 3rd) and available for you to take home and use in personal and/or family devotional time on Ash Wednesday. We are then going to ask you to take a personal or family selfie and post it to our church Facebook page “New Jerusalem Lutheran Church” or on Twitter using #IAmAshWednesday.
